Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina)

Silverfish are silver grey, wingless insects, that get their name from their obvious 'silver, fishlike' appearance.  Known to be commonly found in damp areas, the adult silverfish measures up to 30mm in length and can often be found thriving in kitchens, garages, attics and basements, taking a special liking to damp and soiled clothing.  Silverfish are found on every continent, except for antarctica and are thought to be one of the earliest species of insect, known to man.

Silverfish are nocturnal insects and are rarely seen during the daytime.  They move in a rapid manner, making them hard to spot until the infestation has become heavy and they can live up to 5 years.

What do Silverfish eat?

Silverfish feed on a variety of materials such as, books, leather, coffee, carpets, sugar, paper, photos, cosmetics and starches, and will cannibalise other fallen or injured insects in order to survive.  This normal silverfish can live up to 1 year without food and several months without water and will cause severe damage to household objects, if left untreated.

Reproduction of the Silverfish

The good news is; silverfish reproduce at a very slow rate, in comparison to other insects found in the UK, and a female silverfish will only lay 60 or less eggs at once and on average only 100 per lifetime.

Do silverfish bite or carried diseases?

Silverfish do not bite and are not know to spread any diseases to humans.  However, the presence of a silverfish infestation will attract other predatory insects that are not so harmless.  Spiders and Cockroaches, which are known to bite humans and spread harmful pathogens, including salmonella, prey on silverfish as a food source.  Depending on the level of silverfish infestation in your environment, this can lead to an increased population of these very undesired harmful insects.
