Cockroaches in the UK and the Diseases they spread

There are two species of cockroach, that live in the UK: The German Cockroach that are light yellow/brown in colour and measure about 10-15mm in length.  Oriental Cockroaches are larger, measuring around 20-24mm long, with a dark brown/black appearance.  Both species have become a very common pest in both residential and commercial buildings in the UK and they are responsible for the spread of bacteria such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus and streptococcus, whilst also harbouring the Polio virus.

Breeding, Habitat and Diet

Unlike German Cockroaches, that carry their egg cases with them until the 30 plus nymphs are ready to hatch, Oriental Cockroaches favour laying their 13mm long egg capsules in dark crevices and up to 18 nymphs can hatch from each capsule in around 12 weeks.  Oriental cockroach numphs take between 6-12 months to reach full maturity, where as German Cockroaches are able to reproduce as mature adults in as little as 6-12 weeks

Both species of Cockroaches found in the UK, prefer warm humid environments and can often be found in kitchens, heating systems and around pipes, sinks and stoves.  Due to the fact that cockroaches will eat almost anything to survive, including faecal matter, cockroaches will prefer areas where hygiene is less than par.  However, cockroaches will live for several months without food, if necessary.  Fortunately, for anyone experiencing a cockroach infestation, without a source of water, they are unlikely to live more than a few days.
